            Jeep History

The Jeep is the oldest marque 4 wheel drive vehicle being made today. It has gone through many evolutions and owners since its inception in 1941. The origin of the name is hard to verify but the most popular are competing theories: the original military designation was GP which was phonetically pronounced "Jeep". Many, including Lee Ermey of Mail Call, suggest that soldiers at the time were so impressed with the new vehicles that they informally named it after Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye cartoons created by E. C. Segar. Eugene the Jeep was Popeyes "jungle pet" and was "small, able to move between dimensions and could solve seemingly impossible problems."

Willy-Overland made the first Jeeps in early 1941 and demonstrated their off road capability by driving up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. The government started giving large orders for the vehicle and Ford and others had to pick up the slack with their versions. Since then the Jeep has gone through many evolutions of ownership as shown by the following summary:

Summary of Jeep Ownership

  • 1941-1953: Willys-Overland
  • 1953-1964: Kaiser-Jeep (calling themselves "Willys Motors")
  • 1964-1970: Kaiser-Jeep
  • 1970-1987: AMC (w/ Renault controlling production in 1986)
  • 1987-1998: Chrysler
  • 1998-2007: DaimlerChrysler AG
  • 2007-2009: Chrysler LLC
  • 2009-present: Chrysler Group LLC (Fiat Alliance)

Chrysler LLC now holds title to the Jeep brand in its original headquarters in Toledo, OH although they are no longer produced there.

Jeep Locks and Keys

Jeep locks and keys have evolved over the years. In the early years, Jeeps locks and keys were made by AMC. ( American Motors Corporation ) The American motors name and logo often was on the key.

These Blanks are still readily available. You can purchase Classic AMC blanks at Key men.com

Early Jeep Keys-Sentry Key Programming

Jeep keys became much more sophisticated in 1998. Chrysler started adding a new advanced Anti theft security system to the WJ Grand Cherokees. It was called the Sentry Key Immobilizer System.(SKIS) With this system there is a transponder chip embedded in the jeep key. An RF signal communicates with the key and as long as the vehicles computer recognizes the key, the car is allowed to start and stay running. If keys are lost then you will only be able to have keys made by the dealer or a professional locksmith with the proper key programming equipment. These new keys have to be programmed into the Jeep computer. You are allowed to have 8 keys programmed into the SKIM. ( Sentry Key Immobilizer Module ) A Dart machine was one of the earliest Jeep programmers. If you have 2 keys already for your Jeep, adding a third key is simple. You do not need a locksmith to add a third key. Just follow the directions below.

    Ford History

Based on total world wide sales, Ford is the world’s fourth largest auto maker. Founded in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, MI in June 1903, the Ford Motor Company has become one of the largest and most successful companies besides being one of the few to survive the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Henry Ford’s company is also the largest family controlled company with over 100 years of continuous ownership.

By 1913 Ford had introduced the moving assembly line that greatly enhanced productivity and boosted annual output to 202,667 units. By 1920 total production would exceed over one million cars per year. Ford instituted novel labor practices (criticized by Wall Street at the time) that doubled his factory worker’s pay and cut their hours to 8 hours a day and 5 days a week. Productivity soared and employee turn-over declined dramatically and with these changes cost per unit also declined. Ford workers could now afford to buy the cars they had made.

Henry Ford died of a brain hemorrhage in 1947 and at his funereal an estimated 20,000 people stood outside St. Paul’s Cathedral in the rain with 600 attending inside.

         Early Ford
    Locks and Keys

The earliest Ford keys were for the model T and model A Ford cars. These antique Ford locks and keys could have been manufactured by 1 of 4 different companies. Yale, Baird, Briggs and Stratton or Miller. Miller made the locks and Yale made the keys for these old Fords from what I understand.

Those old Ford Door keys are exactly what we use today for file cabinet locks and office furniture locks. The old ford door key photo I have included is basiclly a yale y11 keyway that we use on many cheap cabinet locks today.

I was not around in the roaring 20’s when these cars were roaming the streets (or dirt) so I dont have alot of insight to give you about these oldies but goodies.

I have provided a photo of the old keys for nostalgia sake. Here is a great link to the Model T forum which has alot of useful information about the model T Ford’s of the 20’s. Model T ford Club of America If anyone would like to provide more detail about these keys and locks for our web site, please feel free to contact us.

In 1953 Ford went to the single sided key blank. These locks were mostly dash mounted 5 pin tumble locks ( see photo below ) These small ford locks could be impressioned. ( For Locksmiths--> ) You could also pick the lock to the left to the accessory position. This would allow you access to the pin through the little hole in the front of the lock. Pushing this pin in and turning the lock further to the left would allow the plug or lock cylinder to come out. You could then easily service the lock by removing the tumbler cap.

In 1965 Ford started using double sided keys for their vehicles. These double sided key blanks could be inserted into the locks from either side. In the early years of the double sided key, the same keyway ( grooving ) was the same for both door and ignition keys but the cuts were different. People would have copies made but copy the door cuts on 1 side of the new blank and the ignition on the other side. So they would have 1 key fit the whole car. You just had to insert the key on the correct side.

Later Ford went to a round head key for the doors and trunk and a square blank for the igntion. The keyways on the door key and ignition key were exactly opposite. These locks were also 5 pin tumbler locks. A lost key could easily be replaced. These ford locks could be impressioned by a master locksmith. The next change for Ford Locks and Keys would come in 1984 with the Ford 10-cut system.

    It is a joke people
